REDCap Data Journey

edit_noteIn Progress: Workflow documentation being finalized by Lasso.

REDCap is used to administer the vast majority of questionnaires and clinical instruments due to its advanced support for item-level data capture, validations, and branching logic. This workflow begins with site data capture and defines ingestion, acquisition QC, scoring, and data distribution (i.e. Lasso DataShare and Data Lake) for structured assessment data obtained via REDCap.

Workflow Details#

1

Fetch Data

  • Lasso fetches data from the REDCap API
  • Saved to Data Lake as BIDS All (PII), then anonymized to BIDS De-ID
2

call_splitAcquisition QC

  • Pass → saved to the Data Lake, proceed to Step 3
  • Fail → workflow ends
3

call_splitScoring Required?

  • Yes → scoring algorithms run, scores added to the payload
  • No → continue straight to Step 4
4

Parallel Processing

  • Convert to BIDS format, save TSV to the Data Lake
  • Run standard Return of Results (RR) and CRF checks
  • Ingest into the Lasso DataShare

STEP 1 - Fetch Data#

The workflow begins when a clinician or participant submits a REDCap questionnaire via Lasso LaunchPad and data is automatically retrieved in TSV format via an API. All incoming data to the Data Lake are first saved to BIDS All (PII) and then anonymized to BIDS De-ID.

STEP 2 - Quality Control#

Acquisition QC is performed on incoming data; data that pass QC are saved to the Data Lake (/sourcedata/sub-/ses-<SES>/phenotype/) and proceed to Step 3.

STEP 3 - Scoring#

If data require scoring, then scoring algorithms are run and the output scores are added to the initial data payload. Otherwise, data continue straight to Step 4.

STEP 4 - Parallel Processing#

The following steps occur in parallel after QC (and scoring, if applicable):

  • Data are converted to BIDS format and TSV files are saved to the Data Lake (/raw/sub-/ses-<SES>/phenotype/)
  • Standard Return of Results (RR) and Case Report Form (CRF) checks are run
  • Data are ingested into the Lasso DataShare

The workflow completes when the parallel processing tasks finish and data are successfully ingested into the DataShare.
